The 1st Scottish Rifles battalion were part of 19 Brigade which at that time were not attached to any particular division but operating as part of III Corps. On 17th November, 1914 they left their billets in Bac St Maur and marched to Houplines, near Armetières and Ploegsteert and went into trenches at Frelinghien where they remained for the rest of the month and through into December. On 19th November, the day on which Wallace Gatrell was killed, the battalion diary recorded that it was cold and snowy and that one man was killed and two more wounded by snipers.
